Starting an exercise program is a lot like the insurmountable task of climbing Mount Everest in flip-flops. Maybe you have a goal of starting a daily fitness program that fits into your busy schedule? You want to exercise; you want to eat right; you want to be healthy, so you take off like a rocket with one terrific heave. You wake up one morning and say to yourself, “Self, this is the day life changes for the better!” And for a couple of days, or even a couple of weeks, you’ve got this thing nailed. But then one morning you stay in bed a little longer, and you just can’t get yourself on track. As the days go by, you find yourself sliding back into your old routines, and everything is back to ground zero.

Sound familiar?

Well, what if there were a solution to this endless frustration of never being able to stick with it? Here at Fountainview Academy, I think we have found the solution: It’s a little program called “Fitness Fifteen.” Fitness Fifteen is a program that one of our teachers, Mr. Lemon, created for himself, so that he could make sure to stick with it every day. He has been doing it for six days a week (Sunday to Friday) for the last fourteen years! So, what’s his secret? He just does as much as he can do in 15 minutes a day. Once the 15 minutes are up, the workout is over. When he started, all those years ago, he was doing only 20 push-ups and 20 sit-ups and a few stretches. Then he progressed to 30, then 40, then 50,… and now you won’t believe what he does in 15 minutes! The Fitness Fifteen routine includes stretches, jumping jacks, chair dips, calf raises, arm circles, push-ups, sit-ups, and steam engines (like a bicycle exercise performed while standing up).

For two weeks Mr. Lemon came to the dorms at 5:45 A.M. and led out in exercises on the lawn (two weeks at the boys’ dorm and then two weeks at the girls’ dorm). Then he challenged us to keep at it for three months, on our own time. If we can stick with it for three months, we will get something more than a high-five. If we persevere our way through three months, we will receive a Fitness Fifteen t-shirt, designed by our very own Jerick Arceo!
